When I was growing up in suburban Ohio I had a lot of dreams. That isn't all that unique. All across the world kids have dreams, sometimes they come true, most of the time they don't. I mean, I didn't dream about working in an office when I was younger, but it happened and it's not so bad right now. One of my dreams was to be an astronaut, then when I got older (and dumber) I dreamed about being in a kick ass rock and roll band. I would play in my silly bands, draw album art, plan for the future. It didn't happen for me, but it did happen for Mike Krol.
A couple of years back I was listening to The Best Show on WFMU when I heard this crazy song by a guy named Mike Krol who seems to be making the exact kind of music I always heard in my head when I was dreaming of being in that kick ass rock and roll band. It was really powerful and super fun and totally took me back to my suburban bedroom wishing I could play these songs live.
The only way to get physical copies of the tracks I heard on The Best Show was to email Mike personally to request them. He had a limited number in his possession and I was lucky enough to snag one of each. A couple days after our email exchange I received his first two albums on vinyl, I Hate Jazz and Trust Fund. I was so psyched to be listening to someone my age living out those junior high dreams. I think I actually played these songs for you the last time I was in Ohio?
This summer Mike's latest record, Turkey, was released on Merge Records. This was exciting for a couple of reasons. The first being that we'd be getting a new Mike Krol record, and the second was the validation that I got as a fan seeing Mike being picked up by one of my favorite labels, Merge. With the release of Turkey, I have gotten to see Mike get his music out to more people and even got to see him play live (something I never thought would happen) here in Boston.
I know that you have had these dreams too, Jeremy, and I wanted to let you know that sometimes they come true. Anyway, the album is awesome and you should 100% buy a copy -below is my favorite song from the new album.
