Message: I think all my friends are boring. It has me worried that I am too, but honestly, I don't think I am. I'm almost 30 now and not really too excited about having to make all new friends. What do I do?
Boring is a word I try not to use. I’m sorry that you feel your friends are boring. Do you have different interests than they do? Or can you just not think of anything fun to do? Is it possible that your friends drink a lot and/or use drugs and you’re not into that? Or vice versa. Because then I could a possible conflict. Sober people don’t always want to hang around drunk people. And that can go both ways, I suppose. However, I have a hard time believing your friends are truly “boring.” Also, I hope they don’t read this! If my friends thought I was boring, I probably wouldn’t want to be around them much. It’s kind of a huge insult, IMO. And not for nothing, but even if I’m with my friends and we’re not doing anything, I STILL have fun because I love being around them.
Do you need suggestions for activities to keep you and your buds occupied? I can give you lots of those. But I think you can handle that on your own. Get creative! The weather is still lovely and there’s so much to do outdoors. There’s also a lot you can do indoors. Never underestimate the power of the themed party. Invite everyone over to drink boxed wine and watch Arrested Development. Or have a potluck and have all your boring friends cook up something special and bring it over. Then you probably get to keep the leftovers! All I’m trying to say is, there’s a lot to do. Go to the movies, go roller-skating, go ice skating, go on a hike, go shopping, paint each other’s nails, eat a nice meal outside on the water, go volunteer somewhere, see a band play, go to some garage sales, learn new recipes, go to a taping of a game show or a talk show, get drunk at happy hour, train for a marathon, etc. And if your friends aren’t into ANY of those things? Then yes. They may possibly be boring. In that case, it’s up to you to inject a little fun into their lives. Or drop em like it’s hot and get your butt on Friendster. (I truly tried to fit another outdated reference into that line, but it just wasn’t happening).
REWIND to this...
Harvey Danger - Flagpole Sitta: Obviously one of the best songs of all time. And the album itself, Where Have All the Merrymakers Gone? is pretty fantastic. But really, Harvey Danger said it best “if you’re bored then you’re boring.” And girl, it’s the truth.
