Message: Hello! I just came across this page through twitter because of an article on One Hundred Thousand.
I really like all your song choices at the bottom of each article. I am currently attending college (a junior) and am worried about student loan debt. I wanted to know if you had any advice about approaching graduation and the imminent debt I am about to walk into. It seems bone crushing. Thanks and I love this site!
Hi! I wish I had really good news for you. Unfortunately, I don’t. Being in debt sucks, and I’m there now. A couple of things about my loans that will probably translate to yours:
- There’s a grace period after your graduate. So don’t panic! You have time to get a job and save up a little. Or run to Canada.
- If you sign up for a certain number of credits (I don’t want to give you a wrong #, so I am giving you no #), your loans are deferred. So get a job that will help pay for school, and sign up for some BS classes at community college and never pay your loans and learn things forever! Like yoga and nutrition and things that will be fun and useful but that you won’t have to write 10 page papers for! (I’m not sure if this is actually a good idea)
- Seeing a financial counselor, accountant, or someone along those lines, is NOT a bad idea.
- It is possible that you will be super broke for a while. I’m talking ramen for dinner, carpooling to work, no fun vacations, downgrading your phone, even moving back in with your parents. Sounds awful. But. Please remember: There is NO shame in any of that. NONE. And many of your peers are probably in similar predicaments, but too embarrassed to admit it.
Honestly, I’m still paying off student loans, and about to apply for a whole bunch more (yay grad school). So I’m not the best person to tell you how to get rid of it. But I can tell you that I’m chipping away, slowly but surely. And I’ve gotten good at cutting corners. Favorite cheap meal to make? Scrambled eggs and spaghetti. Seriously, it’s amazing comfort food and super affordable to make. -T
REWIND to this...
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Give It Away: This song doesn’t seem relevant. And I’m using it because I’m on a weird RHCP kick right now. But you know when Kiedis says “give it away” over and over again? He’s talking about your shit. Your stuff. Your belongings. This is about not being greedy and just loving to give important things to the people around you because there is so much more joy in giving than in keeping. It’s a good one to listen to in times when you’re stressed about money and objects and owing and owning. And it was written before the guys were millionaires, so no need to scoff at the message. Also? This song fucking rocks and it will probably make you dance around and stop worrying about your debt predicament.
