Name: The Opinionator
Message: Hi, Theresa! I am a pretty opinionated gal. I have strong feelings about certain political, religious, and social issues, and I have found that I have a hard time being friends with people who have conflicting opinions. Honestly, I often distance myself from someone who might otherwise be a good friend if I find out that their politics are the total opposite of mine. It actually causes me to lose some respect for them. Do you think that I should forget about politics when it comes to friends, or is having compatible views important in a friendship?
First of all, are you a super hero? Because judging by your name you are, and I kind of love that. All kidding aside, I myself am pretty opinionated. I feel very strongly about many things. I won’t discuss them here as not to offend, and really, that’s not the point of this question, is it.
Having friends with different opinions than your own is kind of what this country is about. Everyone has the right to feel a certain way and to share their feelings and thoughts. We’re pretty lucky in that regard. Do you get into heated discussions with your friends? Sometimes that can be fun! Unless the entire time your friend is speaking you’re actually thinking “you’re so goddamned stupid, have you listened to the bullshit you’re spewing? WHO RAISED YOU!?” If that’s the case, avoid the debates. And don't have friends you think are stupid!
My approach? I love my friends, regardless of their opinions on politics and social issues. However, I find my inner circle to have similar ideas to me. I have a hard time with bigotry and close-minded individuals, and I tend to keep friends that show traces of that at arms length. Of course people are entitled to their opinions, but if you find them offensive, it's easier to separate yourself than get all worked up and agitated over a person you most likely cannot change.
I did want to mention something before giving you some tunes to listen to. If you are friends with someone, or even standing next to someone on a train platform, and you hear them say something that may be hurtful to others or is just straight out ignorant, feel free to speak up. There's nothing wrong with fighting the good fight; not enough of us do that. And keep yourself educated! Research everything. We can never have enough knowledge. Ever. -@Theresa_Martin
REWIND to this...
The (International) Noise Conspiracy: "Only Lovers Left Alive" - Punk rock at its finest! This song speaks to me and I bet it will speak to you too. Short, sweet, and to the point. I discovered this band and this song when I was 16 and rebellious, and I've tried to live words ever since. Check it out, T(I)NC is pretty hard to hate!
